Effective mental health treatment looks at all parts of a person’s life, including work, school, hobbies, and social interactions. Meaningful activities are important for our mental health and can have a big impact on how we feel. When people do meaningful activities—at work, school, or in their community—they often enjoy life more. On the other hand, mental health issues can make it hard to participate in these activities. This can lead to feelings of sadness, disconnection, and isolation.
It’s important to keep a balance in our activities. Focusing too much on one area and ignoring others can lead to feeling overwhelmed. For some people, mental health challenges can disrupt daily routines and coping strategies, which can affect their performance at work and in other areas of life.
Everyday Wellbeing Occupational Therapy can significantly help clients recover by reconnecting them with important areas of their lives. Including this type of therapy in treatment can break the cycle where people with mental health challenges pull away from work, school, exercise, leisure, and social activities. This withdrawal can worsen their mental health.
Occupational therapy can speed up recovery by creating a ‘flywheel’ effect: when patients return to meaningful activities, it helps them heal by encouraging participation in beneficial tasks.
Occupational therapy helps people with mental health challenges achieve a number of crucial recovery milestones:
Move your body more. Research shows a strong link between exercise and mental health. A review of 49 studies with 260,000 participants found that more active people are less likely to feel depressed. This is why occupational therapy is an important part of treating mental health.
Hydrate and fuel your body: Our bodies need water and nutrient-dense foods for optimal health. Ultra-processed foods contribute to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and many other chronic conditions. Occupational therapy can help you identify healthy habits and routines to support your physical and mental health.
Get back to school or work. Not being at school or being unable to work can harm your finances and mental well-being. It can lead to low self-esteem, damaged relationships, and a lack of purpose. Research shows a strong link between unemployment and poor mental health.
Build social connections. Depression, anxiety, and reduced thinking skills in adults can happen when people are socially isolated or have few social ties. Research from Statistics Canada found that 62% of people with mental health-related disabilities who were socially connected rated their mental health positively. In contrast, only 49% of those who were not socially connected reported the same positive outlook.
By combining the need for balanced activities with the advantages of occupational therapy, people can improve their mental health and well-being. Participating in a variety of meaningful activities helps not only in recovery but also enhances the overall quality of life!!
